Port Aransas
Port Aransas Master Angler: Barron Bear
“Coach Bear” was raised fishing the Gulf Coast of Texas. He had great role models for fishing in his youth, with a great uncle who wrote a book “Night Fishing in Texas”. His grandfather was one of the fore- fathers of the original Gulf Coast Conservation Association. Most important though, his father started Coach Bear out very young with a cane pole fishing at the jetties in Galveston.
Over the last 34 years, Coach Bear has worked with thousands of youth coaching them in summer basketball camps. He has worked/taught in various camps at local churches in the Corpus Christi and Houston communities along with several camps at Universities around the state. He has mentored countless numbers of youth and assisted them in pursuing their education thru opportunities that arise for scholarships within the athletic field, whether as team managers, players, or athletic trainers. He coached basketball on the college level at University of Houston, St. Mary’s University (San Antonio), and Sam Houston State University.
Coach Bear and his wife Darla have lived on the water in South Padre and North Padre for the last 19 years. One of their favorite things is to have young people, including their many nieces and nephews, fish off the back deck at their home. This is an opportunity to teach about our great outdoor resources and fuel young people’s thirst for fishing. Fishing’s Future takes this belief to a much higher level!
